Thos. Moser Partners With Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment, Smith Center

In 2023, Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture and the Environment opened the Smith Center for Research and Education to the community. This new community facility builds upon the legacy of founders Mr. Lawrence and Eleanor Smith, ensuring Wolfe’s Neck Center’s role in agricultural innovation and public access. The new center includes two classrooms, a small meeting room, a community dining space, and a teaching kitchen.
Supporting this nonprofit’s eco-friendly mission, they turned to the team at Thos. Moser to design tables for the new space– a company that shares in its commitment to sustainable practices. Using sustainably harvested maple for the table tops added a handmade warmth, while the industrial powder-coated steel bases ensured durability for years of use. Read full article here.

Lewis Lumber to Showcase 40+ Hardwood Species at WPE

Lewis Lumber Products will display more than 40 species of hardwood lumber, including FSC-certified products harvested from well-managed Pennsylvania forests by its sister company Dwight Lumber at Wood Pro Expo Lancaster, Oct 12-13. Read more

Woodworking Industry Mourns Steve Carter

Steve Carter, former owner of Williams & Hussey Machine and Tool Co. and past WCMA Technology Partner died on Wednesday, June 14, 2023. He was 75.

Taking the reins at Williams & Hussey in 1976, Steve spent the next four decades manufacturing his signature moulders and custom knives geared specifically to smaller shops.

Steve was well-known by many WCMA members. He is best remembered for his sense of humor and his dedication to the success of the North American wood industry. Williams & Hussey was sold in 2020 but Steve continued to attend wood industry events including the WCMA Plant Tours events. He also served as WMMA President and will be missed by many in the wood industry. Our condolences go out to the Carter family and Steve's many friends.

Plant Tours Announced for 2023 WCMA Fall Conference

MJB Wood Group Opening New Facilities in Mexico

With these two new facilities, MJB Mexico, headquartered in Saltillo, has six locations strategically located across Mexico to support the growth of leading North American manufacturers as they nearshore operations to Mexico from Asia and to support the growing Mexican manufacturing economy. NWH Donates Quarter-Sawn White Oak

38 Canadian Firms Crack the FDMC 300

Canadain WCMA member Elias Woodwork has been named as one of 38 Canadian companies to make the FDMC300 list for 2023. While this isn't the first time Elias Woodwork has made the list, they did rise to the 122nd position, up from 139th in 2022. Our congratulations to Elias Woodwork for this fine accomplishment in the wood component industry.

Upcoming Webinar: Woodworking Industry Benchmark Study

When: Wednesday, May 10th @ 2PM ET

Woodworkers are invited to see how their businesses stack up compared to the industry as the results of the 2023 Woodworking Network Benchmark Survey are presented on May 10 at 2 p.m. Eastern. Will Sampson, Editorial Director of Woodworking Network / FDMC Magazine, will present the results in a 45-minute webinar that will explore key characteristics of woodworking manufacturers. The survey, conducted in January 2023, received feedback from more than 250 manufacturers of furniture, cabinets and other wood products.

Survey results include:

• Information about companies’ products, longevity, employee counts, and square footage
• Labor force changes, wages, training, outsourcing and lean manufacturing
• Sales, including current, comparison to previous year and expectations
• Causes of higher or lower sales
• Profit margins – past year and their role in estimates
• Bidding – engagement in competitive bidding and success rates
• Usage of software and automation tools, and equipment investment plans
