Carrying Forward a Proud History
For Operations Manager Jay Dee Hanna, those values aren’t abstract. They’re lived every day. “We’re proud of our history of customer service, quality products, and excellent turnaround times,” he shared. “And as of this year, we are proud to have provided jobs for our community for 130 years.” That commitment to people — customers, employees, and community — is a defining thread in Sparta’s story. A Career Built on Hard Work and Hands-On Experience Jay Dee’s own journey mirrors the company’s ethos. He began pulling lumber during high school summers, a job that built both strength and a deep respect for the work. After graduation, he trained in time and motion study, set production rates, and managed incentive programs. His career took him through component manufacturers, cabinet makers, and a large diversified wood products and upholstery company before he joined Sparta Spoke in 1997. At Sparta, he immersed himself in lean manufacturing and cellular machining — training that helped shape the company’s modern operations. But what motivates him most isn’t the machinery or the metrics. “Our company history is fascinating,” he said. “I enjoy the family atmosphere we have instilled here; I enjoy people and have had the pleasure of working with many great customers.” A 74-Year Partnership with WCMA This year, Sparta Woodworks celebrates 74 consecutive years as a member of the Wood Component Manufacturers Association — the longest-standing membership in WCMA history. For Jay Dee, the value of that connection is clear. “The networking is beneficial, as well as the advertising our membership receives at shows and via the website,” he noted. He also emphasized the importance of staying engaged with industry peers. “The exchange of technology and ideas is very valuable in maintaining a successful organization.” Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges As the wood components industry continues to evolve, Jay Dee sees both challenges and promise. “The greatest challenge going forward is recruitment,” he said. “For our business, niche markets have provided the greatest opportunities.” It’s a perspective grounded in experience — and in the resilience that has defined Sparta Woodworks for more than a century. A Legacy That Endures From wooden spokes to modern hardwood components, from pioneer values to lean manufacturing, Sparta Woodworks stands as a testament to what happens when a company stays true to its beliefs while embracing change. WCMA is proud to honor their 74 years of membership, their contributions to the industry, and their unwavering commitment to craftsmanship, community, and integrity. Their story is more than history — it’s a reminder that strong values, skilled people, and a promise kept can carry a company through generations. Comments are closed.
